Reiki originated as a Japanese form of energy healing, a type of alternative medicine. Reiki over the years has often been referred to as Energy Medicine or Energy Therapy, used by practitioners as well as doctors and nurses in the healthcare field across the country. Reiki practitioners use a hands-on or hands-over technique through which "universal" or "source" energy is said to be transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing. Energy is thought to flow to the areas most in need of healing.
